The Soufrière Hills volcano is an active, complex stratovolcano with many lava domes forming its summit, on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. Krakatoa, or Krakatau is a volcanic island situated in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia. 1883 the eruption destroyed two-thirds of the original Krakatoa Island. The eruption of Krakatoa began in the afternoon of Sunday on 26 August 1883, and peaked in the late morning of Monday on 27 August. When finished 70% of the island and its surrounding archipelago were destroyed. Additional seismic activity was reported to have continued until February 1884.
