Hubble Space Telescope Captures Auroras on Uranus

The Uranus aurora photos were captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, marking the first time the icy blue planet’s light show has been seen by an observatory near Earth. Until now, the only views of auroras on Uranus were from the NASA Voyager probe that zipped by the planet in 1986. Hubble recorded auroras on the day side of Uranus only twice, both times in 2011, while the planet was 2.5 billion miles (4 billion kilometers) from Earth.

IBEX and TWINS Observe a Solar Storm

Sun spewed a two million mile per hour stream of charged particles toward the invisible magnetic fields surrounding Earth, known as the magnetosphere on April 5, 2010. As the particles interacted with the magnetic fields, the incoming stream of energy caused stormy conditions near Earth. Some scientists believe that it was this solar storm that interfered with commands to a communications satellite, Galaxy-15, which subsequently foundered and drifted, taking almost a year to return to its station.

Alaska Expedition Will Help to Learn More About Northern Lights

A team of scientists is lofting weather balloons high into Alaska’s northern lights displays, getting a unique inside look at this dazzling atmospheric phenomenon. The two-week expedition is called Project Aether: Aurora, and it’s slated to run through April 13. The goal is threefold: Learn more about the northern lights , test out equipment and help get kids more interested in science, technology, engineering and math, the so-called STEM subjects.

Study of Weather Based on the Climate of Alien Planets

The U.K. agency tasked with monitoring the country’s weather forecasts is expanding its research on how space weather affects Earth and the atmospheres of alien planets around other stars. The U.K. Met Office, which is funded by the government to provide national weather services, is now also planning to supply space weather forecasts for the region. Two teams of scientists presented their research at the U.K.-Germany National Astronomy Meeting held in March in Manchester, England.

Asteroid 2012 EG5 Close Approach

An asteroid with the size of a passenger jet zoomed near the Earth Sunday, on April 1,2012. The asteroid, which called 2012 EG5, was closer than the moon when it flew by Earth at 5:32 a.m. EDT (0932 GMT). According to Nasa the space rock is about 150 feet wide (46 meters). The asteroid 2012 EG5 crept within 143,000 miles (230,000 kilometers) of Earth during its closest approach, which is just over half the distance between Earth and the moon’s orbit.

SDO Has Captured New Video of Huge Solar Tornado

NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft has captured video of a massive solar tornado five times wider than the Earth twisting its way across the surface of the sun. As said researchers NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) looked on as the huge, swirling storm raged on Sept. 25, 2011, spinning solar gas at speeds up to 186,000 mph (300,000 kph. Here on Earth, tornado wind speeds top out at around 300 mph (483 kph).

Two Tiny Asteroids Zipped Close by Earth

Two small asteroids zipped close by Earth on March 26 2012, passing between our planet and the orbit of the moon. As said Nasa scientists this two asteroids not pose any threat of impacting our world. The two space rocks flew by Earth in rapid fire. According to astronomers with NASA’s Asteroid Watch program, one asteroid zoomed by early in the day while the second buzzed the planet at 1:09 p.m. EDT (1709 GMT).

Solar Storm Blasted Earth With Powerful Dose of Energy

According to Nasa scientists a recent spate of furious eruptions on the surface of the sun hurled a huge amount of heat toward Earth. This is the biggest dose our planet has received from our closest star in seven years. Although the influx of solar energy puffed up the atmosphere, increasing drag on low-orbiting satellites, it caused fewer disruptions to electronic infrastructure such as electronic grids than some expected.

Mercury’s Strange Innards

According to new studies the small, sun-scorched planet Mercury has an interior unlike that of any other rocky planet in our solar system and a surprisingly dynamic history. Using observations from NASA’s Messenger spacecraft in orbit around Mercury, researchers have found that the planet’s huge iron core is even larger than they had thought, and it’s likely overlain with a solid shell of iron and sulfur, a layered structure not known to exist on Earth, Venus or Mars.
