DARPA challenge unveiled the complete version ATLAS humanoid robot

The American agency of perspective research defensive projects (DARPA challenge) continues development of biped humanoid robots. Earlier the public already got acquainted with Petman, joint development of DARPA challenge and Boston Dynamics. Later there was Pet-Proto, one of prototypes of the robot which carries the name ATLAS. Pet-Proto was presented last year and intended for demonstration of opportunities of the biped robot. It could overcome independently obstacles, making the decision on a way choice, to jump and clamber, maintains its balance even when hit with a 20 lb ball. It holds balance and remains standing after a side-winder a heavy ball. The humanoid robot quietly goes on a racetrack and overcomes obstacles. Robot height — 187 cm, weight — 150 kg, width of shoulders — 76 cm, in the head is located the whole set of sensors and sensors. The number of hydraulic joints is 28 pieces. Its vestibular mechanism is surprising and delights.

Universal soldiers are reality – Boston Dynamics presented Petman and Atlas soldier robots

The Boston Dynamics created the PETMAN robot, which in a suit of chemical protection is almost indistinguishable from the live person. Initially PETMAN intended for tests of soldier’s equipment, and natural tests which can entail death of people, for example testing of suits of chemical protection with use o f real poison gases. For this reason PETMAN has an anthropomorphous design, which is most repeating outlines and kinematics of a human body. PETMAN imitates movements of the person rather precisely. It is especially necessary for check of suits of chemical protection, after all in fighting conditions at use of the chemical weapon even such trifle as the crack in incorrectly cut out fabric can lead to death of thousands soldiers. PETMAN is equipped with a set of sensors, which allow to estimate, and safe this or that equipment will be how convenient. PETMAN is interesting also to that on its base the field option is created: the Atlas robot soldier, which participates in the DARPA Robotics Challenge program. Atlas is very similar to PETMAN, it has 28 degrees of freedom, powerful hands and feet with the hydraulic drive. It will be even more mobile, than PETMAN. At the moment PETMAN robot is able to go a fast pace, both on equal, and on a cross-country terrain, including ladders, holes and low barriers. The Atlas robot is positioned as the rescuer, who will be able to use the same equipment, as people, but thus will be able to work in literal sense in inhuman conditions of a fire and radiation infection. The technical characteristics allow to use the robot as the fighter.

SCHAFT – the new Japanese robot with stronger muscles

Japanese company SCHAFT Inc. declared break in technologies of the engine, which can bypass restrictions of existing systems. SCHAFT developed and patented a new type of the drive, which will be able to make muscles of the robot much stronger. For the first time the Japanese robot company paid attention to these technologies when developing Urata Leg, advanced model of the HRP3L robot, from Kawada Industries. In Urata Leg standard servo-drivers are replaced with powerful condenser engines of high efficiency, system of water cooling of the engine. Along with algorithms of management they allowed the robot to keep balance, when that made pusher movements or moved a certain freight. Not for long after that, Japanese robot developers decided to create the robot by the name of SCHAFT for introduce the technology. At the heart of this technology the powerful motor engine high-voltage and cooled by liquid, which receives a food from the condenser lies. It, in turn, allows the electric motor to provide the high speed and a high torque (high turns) to robot hands, that is almost impossible with other engines.

DARPA CHALLENGE latest robot CHIMP

Robotic Challenge is the latest entrant of DARPA CHALLENGE $2m program. This is four-limbed robot, which has strength as human, and can climb ladders or use tools. The CMU Highly Intelligent Mobile Platform (CHIMP) uses tracks on the limbs. These tracks help the triple-fingered manipulators to climb the ladders, turn a wheel or remove debris. The robotics engineers, which built the CHIMP think, that in pinch the robot can do anything. The robot is controlling by the people, and provides self protection behavior. This allows the CHIMP to be associated with a robot of fully autonomous. For $2m prize of DARPA CHALLENGE, the participants have to operate the robot without a power, enter and clear a rubble-strewn area, climb ladders, operate valves and use tools.

Boston Dynamics created BigDog Robot

The Boston Dynamics engineering company with funding of Defense Department’s Defense Advanced Research Project Agency, created a robotic dog named BigDog. These robot dogs can help researchers by learning new tricks. BigDog robot can climb, run, slop about 35 degrees, walk through water, snow and rubble. BigDog can run approximately 12,8 miles without stop and refueling. BigDog robot also can carry 340 -lb cargo.

DARPA Quadruped Has Become Faster and Smarter

In DARPA Quadruped robot new version embedded tracking device so he learned how to automatically follow a commands. Thus, the device no longer requires control directly. New version of DARPA Quadruped is much quieter than its previous version. The robot can move around on the road, carrying with over 180 kg of cargo. However, without recharging it can go up to 32 miles. Assuming that the DARPA Quadruped robot will be used primarily for military purposes. He will be able to carry military supplies and equipment. This will increase the mobility of military units.
